Essential for Design – Responsive Websites –

June 14, 2012

Over the last few months I have been reading a lot of blog posts and articles on responsive web design, this is basically when you design a website for desktop, at its maximum visibility level, then you use something called ‘Media Queries’ to make the website look clean and flow on all portable devices (e.g Tablet PCs and Mobile Devices).

These ‘Media Queries’ are written within your CSS code and each element of the query is then called upon when the website works out what device it is trying to be accessed on. This means big things within the web design industry, not only to clients and budgets but also to companies and developers.

In the past when a client requests a website, we would then recommend them to have a mobile site – this is because the majority of people aren’t just accessing the website from a desktop and the capability of mobile devices has significantly improved in the last 5 years – basically this would mean your designer/developer has double the workload and also the budget of the project would increase a fair amount.

These days we use the CSS to tell the website how it should display when accessed on the mobile and tablet devices. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying this completely eliminates the budget increase because this is still a luxury to have and does cost money but, it wouldn’t cost as much to have a responsive website than it would to have a desktop site AND a mobile site.
