Using Hashtags Effectively on Social Media

May 23, 2022

Anyone who uses social media, will have seen hashtags around but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are being used right. By mastering hashtags you’re giving yourself a powerful way to engage with potential customers and increase your brand awareness.

But first, what is a hashtag? A hashtag can be a word or a phrase that can help those who are interested in your topic be able to find it, if they were to search for that particular hashtag.

When using a hashtag, you want to spell it without any spaces, it can include numbers but not symbols or punctuation. A hashtag can be placed at the beginning, middle or end of your post, however they are only effective when they are used in the correct way.

Effective Tips

  • Don’t get carried away! It can be tempting to overload your post with hashtags however only one to three hashtags tend to have the most impact.
  • Try to keep hashtags short and memorable, this is better than trying to using a lot of words in one hashtag.
  • Try to choose a hashtag that people are going to search for, you don’t want to choose a hashtag that is too obscure as no one will find it!
  • Don’t try to overuse hashtags in every post, only use them if they are going to add value and interaction on your post.
  • Not only can you use hashtags to attract members, it can also be used to research your competition, and uncover relevant content related to your industry.

A great way to see which hashtags are effective are to take a look at what influencers are using. Just if you are doing this, make sure that the influencers that you are looking at are related to your business.

Now, let’s take a quick look into using hashtags on a particular social media channel!

  • Twitter – You’re going to want to only use one or two hashtags per tweet, this will make your post accessible when people search for your tag. When it comes to Twitter you’re also going to want to take a look at trending hashtags.
  • Facebook – Hashtags aren’t used as much on Facebook, but if you do choose to use them it is recommended that you only use one or two, as any more can come off as unprofessional.
  • Instagram – Instagram is a great place to use hashtags, as it can increase reach and drive engagement. You are going to want to use about ten to eleven hashtags, some people will even use up to 30!
