Creating a Colour Palette for your Website

February 21, 2022

When starting to create a brand for your business, your colour scheme should be one of the more important parts to look at. Some brands can be recognised from colour alone, like Starbucks, Google, Microsoft and Ikea. That is why it is so important to choose the right colours for your brand, and ensure that they portray what you are wanting to show.

In this blog post, we’re going to go into the six different types of colour schemes, and how you can go about creating these!

Monochromatic

A monochromatic colour scheme is made up of different tones, tints and shades of a single colour. Tints are made by adding white to the original colour, tones are created by adding grey and shades by adding black.

These colour schemes are easy to create and are great for new companies just starting out as it is hard to create a bad colour when sticking to this colour scheme.

Analogous

Normally, these colour schemes are made up of three colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, however it is possible to add more if you wish. This colour scheme is often found in nature, which could be why we find them so appealing!

Triadic

This is made up of three colours that form a triangle on the colour wheel. For example the three primary & secondary colours are triadic colours!

Complementary

Now this might sound more confusing than it actually is, these colours are those that are on opposite sides of the colour wheel – like green and purple!

Tetradic

Tetradic colour schemes are made up of two sets of complementary colours, they then form a square on the colour wheel!

Split-Complementary

This colour scheme is probably the most tricky one, you want to take two complementary colours and then swap one out for that colours analogous colour.

With all the colour schemes you can combine complementary and triadic colour schemes with monochromatic to get a wider range of colours – have fun with it, there is no set rules you must stick to!
